I really want to watch this but I'm afraid I might cry my eyes out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this.
I agree with the one lady though, I don't think light/dark issues can be completely blamed on Eurocentrism/racism/slavery. This is really bad in places like Haiti and Jamaica.
ReplyDeleteIt is more pervasive than you think. It is also an issue in Middle Eastern and Asian cultures. You would be surprised how much skin lightener you can find in an Indian or Pakistani market.
ReplyDeleteMy own grandmother was a beautiful petite southern belle, but she hated her chocolate complexion. I loved he so much...I never understood why she did not love herself as much as we did.
I know. And I'm shocked. I never heard dark skinned/light skinned remarks as a child.
ReplyDeleteNobody in my family is really dark skinned except for two of my brothers, we're all reddish brown for the most part. In the paper bag test, my family is (usually) the paper bag.
But for the most part I grew up in a fairly mixed working class community. It was mostly white but half of the neighborhood was black/East Indian/Asian.
I didn't even learn about the light/dark skin issues until college and I was shocked that this apparent remnant of colonialism still exists.
It has been an ongoing issue for centuries in many cultures. Stay tuned... We will delve more into this issue.
